    Transportation management systems: an exploration of progress and future prospects.

    This research reports the experiences of both adopters and non-adopters of transportation management system (TMS) technology. TMS adopters represent a diverse array of companies, with a surprisingly high percentage of adopters using outsourced services for decision support activities. Motives for adoption tend to align with the firm’s strategic needs though functionality focuses on the shipper’s day-to-day operational needs. While expectations of system performance and return on investment vary greatly, TMS users illustrate a generally high level of satisfaction. Non-adopters view decision support for transportation activities as a low priority. The article explores future prospects for TMS development and adoption

    The interorganizational structures necessary to implement and achieve the logistical performance improvements identified in the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) initiative and related supply chain management concepts are difficult to develop. Firms continue to struggle to implement integrated programs and techniques, particularly with respect to changing operating structures, relationships, and mindsets to facilitate true supply chain integration. This research explores the logistical strategies and structures used by selected food and consumer goods firms to integrate their supply chains. It illustrates effective integration strategies and identifies critical success factors and barriers to successful ECR implementation. A framework is used to guide managers in developing the competencies essential to integrating the supply chain and to establishing the relationships necessary to operate in an ECR environment.     Enduring buyer–supplier relationship and buyer performance : the mediating role of buyer–supplier dyadic embeddedness and supplier external embeddedness

    Purpose – The purpose of this research is to investigate the causal mechanisms that explain the relationship between the long-term buyer–supplier relationship and buyer performance. Building on the growing body of research on social capital in supply chain management (SCM), the authors examine how a buyer achieves superior performance in forming the enduring partnership with a supplier through two different forms of supplier embeddedness: buyer–supplier dyadic embeddedness and supplier external embeddedness. Design/methodology/approach – The bootstrapping method is utilized in data analysis to examine the mediating effects of the two different forms of supplier embeddedness simultaneously on the linkage between the duration of buyer–supplier relationships and buyer performance outcomes. Findings – The authors find that the two forms of supplier embeddedness serve as distinct conduits for the buyer to translate the long-term buyer–supplier relationship into performance effectiveness. Notably, dyadic embeddedness only mediates the linkage between the duration of buyer–supplier relationships and buyer economic performance, while supplier external embeddedness solely mediates the linkage between the duration of buyer–supplier relationships and buyer innovation performance. Originality/value – This study empirically demonstrates that different forms of supplier embeddedness may benefit a buyer differentially when directed at distinct performance goals. If a buyer can leverage both buyer– supplier dyadic embeddedness and supplier external embeddedness, the buyer will overcome value creation limitations of social capital from a single source, obtaining more comprehensive performance benefits sought by developing long-term buyer–supplier relationships.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Logistics outsourcing performance and loyalty behavior : Comparisons between Germany and the United States

Specifically, it aims to develop and test a model of customer loyalty across two cultures to determine if dedicated strategies for building loyalty are required. Design/methodology/approach – This effort develops a conceptual model that provides a better understanding of the relationship between two dimensions of logistics outsourcing performance (goal achievement and goal exceedance) to loyalty across cultures. The model is then tested using structural equation modeling along with multi-group analysis. Findings – The findings indicate that goal achievement strongly influences the loyalty aspects of retention and referrals, but not extension. Meanwhile, all three dimensions of loyalty were influenced by goal exceedance of the logistics provider. Further, goal achievement was found to have a stronger effect on retention only, with goal exceedance demonstrating a stronger influence on extension and referrals. In addition, cultural differences in the model were identified. Research limitations/implications – Future research should examinemore transactional settings as well as other potential moderators that may be consequential to the examination of loyalty formation. Practical implications – The findings suggest that logistics service providers (LSPs) need to have an appreciation for the differences between goal achievement and goal exceedance as it relates to loyalty formation. In addition, LSPs need to adapt their performance goals based on cultural differences that may exist across their markets. Originality/value – The close examination of the two dimensions of outsourcing performance on three aspects of loyalty behavior builds on the extant literature.     Dislocation interactions during low-temperature plasticity of olivine and their impact on the evolution of lithospheric strength

    The strength of the lithosphere is typically modelled based on constitutive equations for steady-state flow. However, strain hardening may cause significant evolution of strength in the colder load-bearing portion of the lithosphere. Recent rheological data from low-temperature deformation experiments on olivine suggest that strain hardening occurs due to the presence of temperature-independent back stresses generated by long-range elastic interactions among dislocations. These interpretations provided the basis for a flow law that incorporates hardening by the development of back stress. Here, we test this dislocation-interaction hypothesis by examining the microstructures of olivine samples deformed plastically at room temperature either in a deformation-DIA apparatus at differential stresses of ≤4.3GPa or in a nanoindenter at applied contact stresses of ≥10.2GPa. High-angular resolution electron backscatter diffraction maps reveal the presence of geometrically necessary dislocations with densities commonly above 1014m−2 and intragranular heterogeneities in residual stress on the order of 1 GPa in both sets of samples. Scanning transmission electron micrographs reveal straight dislocations aligned in slip bands and interacting with dislocations of other types that act as obstacles. The resulting accumulations of dislocations in their slip planes, and associated stress heterogeneities, are consistent with strain hardening resulting from long-range back-stresses acting among dislocations and thereby support the form of the flow law for low-temperature plasticity. Based on these observations, we predict that back stresses among dislocations will impart significant mechanical anisotropy to deformed lithosphere by enhancing or reducing the effective stress. Therefore, strain history, with associated microstructural and micromechanical evolution, is an important consideration for models of lithospheric strength.     Anti-α-glucose-based glycan IgM antibodies predict relapse activity in multiple sclerosis after the first neurological event

    Background There is no specific serum-based biomarker for the diagnosis or prognosis of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Objective We investigated whether levels of IgM antibodies to Glc(alpha 1,4) Glc(alpha) (GAGA4) or to a panel of four glucose-based glycans could differentiate MS from other neurological diseases (OND) or predict risk of early relapse following first presentation (FP) of RRMS. Methods Retrospective analysis of 440 sera samples of three cohorts: A) FP-RRMS (n = 44), OND (n = 44); B) FP-RRMS (n = 167), OND (n = 85); and C) FP (n = 100). Anti-GAGA4 IgM levels were measured by enzyme immunoassay in cohort-A and cohort-B. Cohort-C IgM antibodies to glucose-based glycan panel were measured by immunofluorescence. Results FP-RRMS had higher levels of anti-GAGA4 IgM than OND patients (cohort-A, P = 0.01; cohort-B, P = 0.0001). Sensitivity and specificity were 27% and 97% for cohort-A; and 26% and 90% for cohort-B, respectively. In cohort-C, 58 patients experienced early relapse (= 24 months), and 11 did not experience second attack during follow-up. Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated decrease in time to next relapse for patients positive for the antibody panel (P = 0.02, log rank). Conclusions Serum anti-GAGA4 IgM discerns FP-RRMS patients from OND patients. Higher levels of serum anti-alpha-glucose IgM in FP patients predict imminent early relapse.     Osteoid osteoma of the femur in a 7-month-old infant treated with radiofrequency ablation

    Osteoid osteoma occurs most commonly in children, adolescents, and young adults between the ages of 5 and 30 years. In the preschool age group, it is quite uncommon, accounting for only 3–8% of all osteoid osteoma cases. We report a case of osteoid osteoma in a 7-month-old infant, who presented with decreased use of the right lower extremity due to pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an atypical appearance. A biopsy of the lesion, with histopathological examination, confirmed the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the nidus under computed tomography (CT) guidance was performed. The patient developed a recurrence after 3 months, which was treated with a second RFA. On subsequent follow-up, the infant did not show signs of pain after 1 month. In summary, this case report shows that osteoid osteoma can present in early infancy and can be successfully treated with RFA at this age, however, recurrence after the procedure can occur and close follow-up is recommended
